Part of the reason I have considered putting on an aftermarket exhaust is that I test-drove a '96 Savage with 15,000km on it about a month ago, and it seemed to have more power than the '97 I am going to buy. It had an aftermarket exhaust on it, but not the Supertrapp. It looked more like the "cigar-shaped" stock exhaust, but fatter. It was quite loud, and had a rather annoying note to the exhaust sound. I didn't like the sound and the dealer told me that it probably wouldn't contribute to increased power. It wasn't until I test-drove the '97 with stock exhaust that I formed the opinion that the exhaust had increased the power on the other one. The '96 wasn't in nearly as nice shape, I knew nothing about its owner, it had no other accessories and the dealer wanted the same price as the '97 I'm buying. It could have also had the carb modifications which may have contributed more to the power increase.
I'm certainly not looking for "crotch rocket" power, or of course I wouldn't be looking at a Savage. But once you've ridden one with some extra horses and know how it can perform, you tend to get greedy!
